Ingredients
Scale
- 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 cup whole-wheat breadcrumbs
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 large egg (or flax egg for vegan option)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp olive oil for cooking
Instructions
- Drain and rinse black beans under cool water until no foam appears.
- In a large bowl, mash beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but still chunky.
- Stir in chopped onions, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Add egg (or flax egg) and mix until everything is evenly incorporated.
- Shape mixture into 6-8 patties about 1 inch thick.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook each patty for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider mixing in fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley.
- Substitute chickpeas for a different taste profile or add shredded carrots for extra texture.
- Chilling patties before cooking helps them hold together better.
