Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs (room temperature)
- 2 tbsp red gel food coloring
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined.
- In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, eggs, food coloring, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
- While cooling, prepare cream cheese frosting by beating softened cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.
- Frost the cooled cakes generously with cream cheese frosting.
Notes
- For an extra flavor boost, add a teaspoon of espresso powder to enhance the chocolate notes.
- Swap cream cheese frosting for whipped cream for a lighter version.
