Scale
- 4 cups day-old bread, torn into pieces
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- In a bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and cinnamon until smooth.
- Place the torn bread in the greased baking dish and sprinkle raisins on top if using.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing down to ensure all pieces are soaked.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes until golden brown and set in the middle.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
Notes
- Use stale bread for optimal absorption of custard.
- Allow at least 30 minutes for soaking to achieve a creamy texture.
