Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (for filling)
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for crust)
- 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, diced)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 6–8 tbsp ice water
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
Instructions
- Prepare your apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into thin wedges. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Create the dough: In a bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add ice water until the dough forms.
- Chill the dough by shaping it into two discs, wrapping in plastic wrap, and refrigerating for at least one hour.
- Make the filling: Combine sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour; toss until evenly coated.
- Roll out your dough on a floured surface; roll one disk into a circle larger than your pie pan and transfer it to the pan.
- Add filling and top crust: Pour apple filling into the crust. Roll out the second disk over the filling, cutting slits for steam vents or creating a lattice design.
- Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake for 15 minutes; reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until bubbling.
Notes
- For added flavor, experiment with different apple varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji.
- To prevent a soggy crust, consider pre-baking the bottom crust slightly before adding the filling.
